- W264359763 abstract "Reading materials have traditionally played an important role in both the instructional and guidance aspects of the educative process. In general, the emphasis has continued to be on the utilization of the printed word as a didactic (instructional) medium. It has been felt that textbooks, novels, anthologies, monographs, pamphlets, educational and occupational materials, and more recently-programmed instructional materials contain significant cognitive learnings which the student must master in order to be educated adequately, to solve a particular problem, or to make an important decision. Historically, however, there has been a trend parallel to the above line of thought which has emphasized the use of reading materials to promote mental health by serving as media for enabling students to solve critical problems they encounter at various developmental stages in their lives. This use of books for therapeutic rather than instructional purposes is known as bibliotherapy. Bibliotherapy has been defined as a process of dynamic interaction between the personality of a reader and the literature he readsinteraction that can be used for personality assessment, adjustment, and growth. Thus, the practitioner (e.g., teacher, counselor) can use both instructional and imaginative literature as vehicles for mental health objectives. Although books have been used for therapeutic purposes, literally for centuries, it has only been rather recently that the fundamental dynamics of bibliotherapy have been recognized. The bibliotherapeutic process consists of the following three general stages:" @default.
