- W265207939 abstract "Kerig, P. K., & Lindahl, K. M. (Eds.). (2001). Family Observational Coding Systems: Resources for Systematic Research. Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum. 301 pages. ISBN 0-80583323-4. $79.95 (hardcover). Kerig and Lindahl have assembled a vividly detailed, practical, and comprehensive selection of family observational coding systems in this cogent, articulate volume. Thanks to their attention to organization and the shared features of such systems, the authors provide insights others might overlook if encountering a specific coding system individually. Two introductory chapters (one by each editor) lay the groundwork for extensive comparisons between systems and their features. Kerig addresses conceptual issues first, then Lindahl focuses on methodological issues. Fourteen chapters follow, each describing, explaining, and evaluating a different observational system. As Kerig notes, the appreciation for expanding observations of the social context of family interactions is growing among researchers. This volume displays attention to a variety of ways in which the context (in the broadest sense of the term) is relevant and can be assessed using existing instruments. Kerig's chapter on conceptual issues carefully organizes the development of the systems that are in the volume. Readers seeking sustained discussions of the links between theoretical constructs and methodological innovation will profit enormously from her attention to generalizability, questions regarding potential integration of new systems with older systems, and the anticipation of researchers' concerns across the field. Given the diversity of foci family researchers explore, Kerig's efforts are worth close reading. In a short second chapter, Lindahl frames important methodological issues for the reader and explains the solutions or considerations the succeeding systems employ. An important point she makes is that, although desirable, the entire family unit is not often practical to code. Thus, each method focuses on dyadic or triadic interactions or processes. Nevertheless, Lindahl asserts, the observational systems provide good data on the interdependencies within the family relationships and can serve systemic (particularly microanalytical) theoretical goals well. The family systems theoretical perspective often inspires the use of these systems, and Lindahl notes that (unlike self-report data) observational methods allow clear recognition of the need for interjudge (interobserver) reliability. Each method of observational coding in the volume reports on this reliability by way of one or more of three indices: percent agreement, Cohen's kappa, and correlation. One of the best features of this volume is the use of common threads of analytical attention that each chapter includes. Chief among these are (a) the theoretical foundations of the measure, (b) the strategies in conceptualization and methodological choices made by each researcher, (c) a description of the properties and content of the measure, (d) the evidence for both reliability and validity, and (e) notations of the method's results to date. A researcher seeking to emulate an existing method could scarcely ask for more relevant information, because the editors have anticipated a working researcher audience and precisely matched their goals. Novice researchers and graduate students will find clear and articulate rationales for each system in corresponding chapters. The first system examined is the Iowa Family Interaction Rating Scales (IFIRS), a macrolevel observational coding system developed to measure relatively stable features of interactions, such as the behavioral and emotional characteristics of individuals and their interactions. A chief concern with reliability led authors Melby and Conger to describe the training of coders, then the populations assessed and the results of some IFIRS projects. The first was a 4-year panel study of the relationship between economic hardship and certain developmental outcomes (with a focus on psychological well-being of family members). …" @default.
