Os solos predominantes nessa area sao em geral, profundos, de baixa fertilidade natural e as vezes apresentam uma camada adensada, configurando os solos coesos. Esta coesao afeta propriedades fisicas, quimicas e hidricas do solo, que interferem diretamente na produtividade das culturas e na renda dos agricultores. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar o efeito do uso agricola sobre a resistencia do solo a penetracao de raizes em horizonte coeso de solo cultivado com cana-de-acucar e estimar teores de agua capazes de minimizar a coesao do solo. Foram coletadas amostras do horizonte coeso em perfil de solo de uma area cultivada e de uma com mata nativa. Nelas foram determinadas porosidade total (macro, meso, micro e criptoporosidade), densidade do solo, curva caracteristica de retencao de agua no solo e resistencia do solo a penetracao de raizes. O solo cultivado apresentou maior capacidade de retencao de agua, indicando que o manejo influenciou na distribuicao do tamanho dos poros. A resistencia do solo a penetracao de raizes foi um parâmetro sensivel para medir diferencas de grau de coesao e a area com cultivo apresentou os maiores valores. Na area com mata nativa, a variacao da umidade do solo nao promoveu valores restritivos de resistencia do solo a penetracao das raizes. A B S T R A C T Coastal Tablelands occupy an extensive area in the Brazilian coast and due to their flat relief favorable to mechanization, high rainfall precipitation and proximity to the large consumer centers, are intensively used with agriculture. The predominant soils in this area are generally deep, of low natural fertility and sometimes present a hard dense soil layer, configuring the cohesive soils. This cohesion affects soil physical, chemical and water properties, which directly interfere with crop productivity and farmers' income. The aims of this work were to evaluate the effect of the agricultural use on the soil resistance to root penetration into cohesive horizon of soil cultivated with sugarcane and to estimate water levels able to minimize soil cohesion. Samples were collected from the cohesive horizon in soil profile of one area cropped and one under native forest. In them were determined total porosity (macro, meso, micro and cryptoporosity), soil bulk density, water retention characteristic curve and soil resistance to root penetration. The cropped soil showed higher water retention capacity than the soil under forest, indicating that the management influenced the distribution of pore size. Soil resistance to root penetration was a sensitive parameter to measure differences in degree of and the area under cultivation had the highest values. In the area under native forest, soil moisture variation did not promote restrictive values of soil resistance to root penetration.
