- W26599092 abstract "Electron beams provide a convenient probe for the creation of excited states at the solid-vacuum interface. The energies of these states range from a few tens of milli-electron volts for vibrational states to several kilo-electron volts for excited core states. They are studied by three distinct classes of experiment: measurements of the characteristic energy losses suffered by electrons in the excitation process, measurements of the threshold energies for the creation of excited states, and analysis of the photons or electrons emitted to conserve energy in the decay back to the ground state. These approaches have in common a sensitivity to the surface region that is consequence of the short mean free path for inelastic scattering of low-energy electrons. It is a perverse fact, however, that the very inelastic damping that enables us to restrict our view to the surface region, renders that view highly distorted. These effects will be illustrated by spectra of aluminum and silicon surfaces." @default.
