- W266169778 abstract "Two common autopsy misconceptions are that a postmortem examination always finds the cause of death and that clinical and circumstantial evidence is not needed to determine the cause of death (i.e., the autopsy stands alone). In fact, the autopsy prosector must always interpret the autopsy findings in conjunction with the clinical and circumstantial evidence. The autopsy may provide both positive and negative (exclusive) findings that are important to determine the cause of death. There are several disease processes (e.g., myocarditis) that will be missed without a histopathological examination. Although toxicology studies are not done routinely in most hospital autopsies, they are frequently done with forensic autopsies. With few exceptions, death due to intoxication has few gross or microscopic findings at autopsy. Therefore, to detect a death due to a possible intoxication, one must perform a toxicologic analysis." @default.
