- W266351377 abstract "ONE OF THE MOST ENDURING PROBLEMS of literary theory has been the relationship between the general and the individual, the universal and the particular with regard to the characters of literature. Aristotle first raises this issue in chapter nine of the Poetics where he contrasts the characters of Greek comedy and tragedy. He equates the representative characters of comedy with the probable and universal, while the specific historical characters of tragedy deal with the particular and the possible. Comic writers, says Aristotle, do not write about specific persons, but tragedians still cling to the historic names of individuals. Taken and applied in contexts far different from the Poetics, these distinctions have often been repeated. For instance, Diderot, in his Entretiens sur Fils Naturel, says that le genre comique est des especes, et genre tragique est des individus (Troisie'me entretien). In Le Rire, Bergson claims that the hero of tragedy is a unique individualitd while comedy is concerned with general types: La comedie peint des caracteres que nous avons rencontres, que nous rencontrerons encore sur notre chemin. Elle note des ressemblances." @default.
