- W2665443 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents an introduction to the extrahypothalamic structures in neuroendocrine regulation. Though the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) serves as the integrating centre for neuroendocrine control of anterior pituitary secretion, considerable evidence has accumulated during the past two decades that extrahypothalamic structures play an important role in this mechanism. This is evident from studies which involve extrahypothalamic lesions, stimulations, and hypothalamic deafferentations. The role of the extrahypothalamic structures has also been demonstrated in the hypothalamic regulation of autonomic and behavioral functions, and in the modulation of the electrical activity of hypothalamic neurons. Though a variety of stresses produce an adrenocortical discharge, it is reasonable to assume that some effects on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis are mediated by systemic and others by neurogenic mechanisms. The hypothalamic island preparation has been used to differentiate between these two kind of stresses into those which are humoral and act directly on the hypothalamus, and those which depend upon the intactness of the nervous connections between the hypothalamus and the rest of the brain." @default.
