- W2666544945 abstract "According to cognitive theory, inflated responsibility plays a central role in the onset and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This chapter discusses the relationships between heightened responsibility appraisals and two characteristic symptoms of OCD: compulsive checking and reassurance-seeking (RS). The first-line intervention for OCD is exposure and response prevention (ERP), an empirically validated treatment. The first step for intervening with responsibility, compulsive checking, or RS is to address the nature of the intrusive thoughts. Inflated responsibility appraisals have been highlighted by cognitive theory and research for their role in maintaining OCD symptomatology, including compulsive checking and RS. As such, this type of appraisal is likely to be a key target of treatment for many clients. Responsibility pie charts may be useful in helping a client to visualize the discrepancy between their subjective feelings of personal responsibility for preventing feared outcomes, and a more realistic attribution of responsibility." @default.
