- W266803707 abstract "Earlier studies have compared the behavioral characteristics of binaural click lateralization to the properties of the first major peak (β) of the binaural difference waveform obtained from brainstem auditory evoked potentials. They found that β exists only when a binaural click is perceived as a single fused image. Moreover, on the basis of β latency it was possible to predict psychoacoustical ITD-ILD matching curves. In the present paper we have investigated the possibility that the β generator is part of the neural process that codes the position in which a binaural click is perceived. Position judgment measurements were obtained in normal subjects and in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In normal subjects the functions that describe the dependence of the position judgment on ITD and ILD were different from the functions that fitted the dependence of β latency on ITD and ILD. In those MS patients whose β was measurable, its dependence on ITD was normal whether their performances in psychoacoustical tasks that involved ITD were normal or abnormal. Longer latencies of β relative to normal were found as a function of ILD in MS patients whose psychoacoustical performances were abnormal, even when the abnormality was found only in tasks that involved ITD. These experimental results lead us to conclude that the β generator is not sufficient to code the position of binaural click, but that it supplies the information that inputs from both ears must be merged and analyzed as a single sound." @default.
