- W267121290 abstract "By mid-1987, the commercial and trade press were carrying articles with headlines such as “Metals Prices Rebound”. In the July 31, 1987, New York Times article of that title, B.J. Feder stated that “rising metals prices . . . are expected to be a fact of industrial life for the rest of this year, according to economists and traders.” The expansion of the world economy, along with reductions in exchange rates and inventories, had by then brought about broadly based metals price increases. At that time, with continued GNP growth and reductions in both inventories and the value of the dollar, there was the expectation that higher prices would be sustained through the remainder of the decade. Indeed, one plausible view of the future, based on the stability of these factors, is that a long period of falling and low metals prices has been reserved for the last decade of the 20th century." @default.
