- W267713260 abstract "The situation in foreign languages at Smith College prior to the introduction of computer technology doubtless reflects conditions familiar to many administrators and faculty. Our foreign languages program suffered from an aging and outdated language laboratory, iII-equipped classrooms, pedagogy hampered by the lack of topical materials, and instructors frustrated by limited support and insufficient time to investigate what the technologies had to offer. We were fortunate to have an academic computing staff both capable and eager to begin support of projects in the humanities. Together with faculty specialists who added pedagogical and subject-matter expertise, a team was formed to plan a foreign language media center, the Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLAC). This name, which links the two parts of the field often considered only marginally related, reflects the primary organizational and pedagogical principles for the project: integration of the language and cultural components. A universal computer workstation was conceived at which students could access authentic audio, video and print materials to develop cultural as well as linguistic proficiency. Networking the workstations represented an essential component of the project from the start because of the storage requirements of digital audio. We also sought the ease with which networked programs and applications can be accessed, transferred, stored, upgraded and modified. The Multimedia Workstation The center proper was designed with 61 student workspaces arranged to allow for both independent and small-group work. Currently, 29 of the workspaces are equipped, housing IBM Personal System/2 Model 55 workstations. All of the PS/2s are configured with IBM M-Audio Capture & Playback Adapters, and 15 of them also run M-Motion Video Adapters. All workstations include IBM 8515 Color Displays and Tandberg TLH 82 Learning Headsets for listening and recording. The center also houses nine Pioneer videodisc players to support interactive video. Of the 29 Model 55 workstations currently installed, 23 are used as student stations. The other six-- along with a PS/2 Model 70 and Model 80--are available to faculty and to the CFLAC staff for curriculum development projects. An Electronic Classroom The workstations in the Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures are designed for individual use. For group work, we equipped a separate Electronic Classroom (EC). The EC houses one faculty and 15 student PS/2 workstations equipped similarly to those in the CFLAC. Since video in the Electronic Classroom is designed for group rather than individual work, it is projected on a large screen and can be controlled interactively from the faculty station. The Electronic Classroom and CFLAC are linked via a lOMbit Ethernet network. Students working in the EC can access any of the programs available in the CFLAC, with the exception of interactive video. Software for Language Learning Software used at Smith College's CFLAC is a mixture of commercially available and in-house products. Primary among the commercial packages are the word processors/data sets for French and Spanish, systeme D (Heinle and Heinle Publishers, Boston) and Salsa (InterLex Associates, Ithaca, N.Y.). Materials such as electronic workbooks and interactive video applications are being developed using several author-ing tools, including Asymetrix ToolBook and the CALLS and WinCALIS programs developed at Duke University. In-house development of software follows a modular design principle: shells are created that can be mixed and linked to one another in support of new applications. These shells include a controller for both interactive videodisc and videotape, and a dictionary program. In addition, a series of digital audio applications features a mark program for pausing digital speech, a listen and repeat program, a digital tape recorder program and a self-correcting dictation program. …" @default.
