- W267768864 abstract "Located between Houston and Beaumont, about 38 miles from the coast, the city of Liberty, established in 1831, is older than the state of Texas itself. Two branches make up First Liberty National Bank, the main office in Liberty and the second office in Dayton, six miles away. Prior to the storm, the Dayton branch ran out of cash, but the main branch was able to aid customers as they fled the city. We had a small run on the bank that morning but we were able to service customers, says David Castle, senior vice-president of deposits. After Rita slammed into the Louisiana and Texas coasts, on Friday, Sept. 23, the city of Liberty, population 10,000, lost power and suffered severe wind damage. For weeks after the storm, more utility crews than residents resided in the town, repairing downed power lines and cutting up and moving massive trees that blocked city roads. bank and most of the city was without power for over a week. bank coped with the disaster by bringing in its back-up generator to power the main branch. That generator is worth its weight in gold, says Castle. bank not only served customers who returned after the storm, but employees as well. About 15 employees who were unable to leave the town stayed at the well-lit, air-conditioned bank. foresight to buy a generator was just one part of First Liberty's disaster contingency plan, which assigned teams of employees and officers specific duties, one of which is to contact each other after a major event and to report where they are and what is going on. Prior to Rita, the bank and the community as a whole served Katrina evacuees who came into town. We were cashing checks from them. community as a whole spent a good amount of time feeding them, he says. It was a really nice outpouring of aid. Take care of your people first Thomas W. Ellison remembers when in 1961, at age 19, he spent the night working with volunteers during Hurricane Carla's onslaught. He and fellow residents of Jefferson County worked to save a levee on the northern side of Port Arthur, Texas, during the category 5 hurricane. The water over-topped part of the levee, says Ellison, who with another volunteer was helping operate a trunk-mounted crane piling dirt on the levee at 3 o'clock in the morning. Commercial Bank of Texas, N.A., where Ellison is president and CEO, is no stranger to disasters either. In 1984, a fire destroyed half of the main branch of the bank, located in the town of Nacogdoches. On Feb. 1, 2003, a four-foot piece of the ill-fated space shuttle Columbia fell into the main branch's parking lot, prompting no less than 50 media vans to swarm to the area. Most recently, the $295 million bank helped deal with an influx of 3,000 evacuees from Katrina. …" @default.
