- W267995440 abstract "The Oxford Companion to Thought. Edited by Adrian Hastings, Alistair Mason, and Hugh Pyper, with Ingrid Lawrie and Cecily Bennett. Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 2000. xxix + 777 pp. 40.00 (cloth); $75.00 (cloth). At first glance this seems to be an impossible (if not imposing) title for any work. How could this be done in the space of one-admittedly largevolume? You are in good company with your doubts, initially shared by the senior editor, Adrian Hastings, on being offered the task of editing such a work. In his hands this task has resulted in an amazingly comprehensive yet concise to contemporary thought, broadly conceived to provide a view of Christian as it flourishes today (p. ix). Further, rid your mind of the temptation to consider this as a companion to doctrine. There are plenty of those, and this work is not one of those. Certainly it has the doctrinal, as most forms of Christianity regard doctrine and its history as central, but it includes far more (hence the term thought and not philosophy or theology): the institutional church, its history and national characteristics; ethics, worldviews, literature, scientific discoveries (evolution and its subsequent Wirkungsgeschichte, for instance). Further, the philosophical, ethical, political, and psychological are not forgotten, and place is made for philosophers and theologians ancient and modern, for spirituality, for mystics, for individuals sacred and secular, for times and places, periods and cities. Thus amazingly, and a reflection on the outstanding editorial work accomplished here, all this is encompassed in only 770 pages. This includes 260 contributors from major branches of Christianity (Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) and from twenty different countries, representing differing stances-described as conservative, liberal, radical, catholic, and evangelical. All these are brought together in order to illuminate the diversity and breadth of contemporary thought. In the process, the editors have managed not to forget generous survey articles and entries on biblical topics, the latter, of course, focused on those biblical ideas or motifs that play a prominent role in contemporary society. In addition, survey articles are included that are critical as orientations to the whole field of twentieth-century thought, with one article per century and for each geographical or national region. There are also entries on prominent and significant symbols (water, bread, wine, light, darkness) as well as on non-Christians (such as Plato, Aristotle, Freud, Marx, Nietzsche, Jung) who have influenced modern thought. …" @default.
