- W268045659 abstract "A Fire in My Heart: Kurdish Tales. By Diane Edgecomb, with contributions by Mohammed M. A. Ahmed and Ceto Ozel. (Westport, Connecticut, and London: Libraries Unlimited, 2008. Pp. xvi + 159, maps, photographs, illustrations, index. $40.00 cloth.)Diane Edgecomb has assembled an impressively large corpus of stories from Kurdistan, paying close and careful attention to diverse cultural traditions of Kurdish people from various regions. Edgecomb is a skillful storyteller, and A Fire in My Heart contains over thirty popular Kurdish folktales, legends, and historical oral traditions that she has retold based on her own collecting and recording. The diverse nature of the stories that the author has recorded, the legends, the historical and the ethnographic renderings, and the detailed information on Kurdish culinary accounts, as well as other rich oral traditions drawn from various local regions offer insight into a vibrant and rich set of cultural and historical themes. In addition, the book contains a panoply of fascinating and colorful photographs documenting the Kurdish people in their broader landscape, and all from an historical perspective that shows changes and continuities within the culture. The stories, along with the wealth of cultural and historical background provided, create a valuable book that can be offered without reservation by teachers to students of folklore.Various nation-states have tried to silence the Kurdish peoples, and so A Fire in My Heart is an important work because the publication of these stories gives voice to Kurdish ethnic minorities living throughout the Middle East. In the stories, animals often engage in debates that are forbidden by officials in real life. But it is through the narrative voices of these animals that the reader can clearly hear and understand what the Kurdish people have to say. Thus, the collection of stories in this book becomes a vehicle of expression for Kurdish political and cultural discourse that has shaped and been shaped by their historical experience. The author organizes the stories thematically. Each cluster of stories delineates principal themes, such as the importance of confidentiality or of loyalty. This is reflected, for example, in the tale of Shahmaran, the beautiful python queen, who leads a solitary life at the bottom of a well outside of society and is discovered by a boy named Jamisav when he gets stuck in a hole. Shahmaran rescues Jamisav and returns him to the world of humans on the condition that he keep her existence secret. …" @default.
