- W268389680 abstract "I have incorporated a daily 10-minute silent reading routine into my high school science classroom that supports my district's strategic plan for Reading Across Content Areas (North High School 2005). The routine also addresses many teachers' goal to increase students' knowledge of current events in science. How the idea was born While observing another teacher implement a reading routine at the beginning of class, I was amazed at how the reading time created an ambience of focus and organization. I decided to use the reading time in my physics classroom to expose students to current events in science and the relevance of science to their daily lives. The routine occurs during the first 10 minutes of class, allowing sufficient time--in our 90-minute block scheduling--for labs and activities. Setting up and establishing the routine Before implementing the routine in my physics classroom, I created a classroom library filled with science magazines and books. To initially stock my classroom library I asked friends and associates to donate their science magazines. To supplement the magazines I also looked through bargain tables at local book stores and picked up easy reading books on science topics. I especially sought astronomy titles--that subject seemed to illicit the most interest from students, yet time available for covering astronomy in the physics curriculum was limited. To build on the original classroom library, I subscribe to a variety of science magazines, clip out newspaper articles, and print articles from various science-related internet sites. Magazines in our classroom library include National Geographic, Discover, Scientific American, Popular Science, New Scientist, and Current Science. The following websites are also great sources for science articles: www.sciencedaily.com, www.sciencenewsforkids.org, www.CNN.com, and www.nytimes.com. During the first week of school every year, the 10-minute silent reading is established as students practice the routine and we discuss what is expected and what behaviors are unacceptable. As students enter the classroom, I play music and remind students to select a magazine. I turn the music off about two to three minutes after the bell has rung, telling students that when the music stops, silent reading has begun. The first week, if a student talks during the reading I remind them that it is distracting to other students and it will cost them a point. The expectations during the 10-minute routine are: * Silent reading is required. * The reading materials should be chosen from the classroom library. To read other science-related material, teacher approval is required. * No writing or textbook reading is allowed during this time. * Everyone in the room reads, including the teacher. * If students do not participate in the routine, weekly participation points are docked. (Rarely does it come to this because students willingly embrace the routine.) Once students are introduced to the routine, every class starts with 10 minutes of silent reading. The routine is the same all year. Music is always played as students enter the classroom. During that time they choose their magazines and may talk with their neighbors. Turning off the music is the signal that silent reading time has begun. After silently taking role, I choose a magazine and join students in the silent-reading routine. …" @default.
