- W2684185743 abstract "The patients of senile age belong to the adverse drug reaction (ADR) high risk group. The ADRs reduces the patients’ quality of life, causes repeated hospitalizations and makes the cost of treatment expensive. STOPP/START criteria were intended for inspecting medical prescriptions aiming at the optimization of medical therapy in patients over 65 years old. To study the frequency of potentially inappropriate prescribing (IP) of the medications in senile patients according to STOPP/START criteria. The analysis of 170 patient’s case history records (59 male and 111 female patients aged 85±5.31) was performed. All patients were under treatment in the cardiology department and were taking on average 8.810±2.745 medications. Later the medications from the drug chart were analyzed concerning the IP presence in them (by STOPP/START criteria). By STOPP/START criteria 135 IPs were detected in the patient’s case history records, which makes 8.698% of all prescriptions (1552 medications). The number of patients who were prescribed IPs made 79 people (46.47% of all patients). The most frequently commonly used IPs (% of all):•Glibenclamide with type 2 diabetes mellitus 18(13,333%)•NSAID with heart failure 17(12,592%)•NSAID with moderate-severe hypertension 15(11,111%)•Oral elemental iron doses greater than 200 mg daily 11(8,148%)•First generation antihistamines 7(5,185%)•Aldosterone antagonists with concurrent potassium conserving drugs 7(5,185%) The obtained data suggest the frequent prescribing of IPs to the patients of senile age. It is known that STOPP criteria have a greater interaction with the ADRs growth compared with other criteria. Patients of senile age are frequently prescribed IPs, essentially reducing the quality of life and potentiating the growth of adverse clinical outcome which calls for the pharmacotherapy optimization. One of the optimization instruments are STOPP/START criteria set up to prevent the inappropriate prescribing of medicinal products to the people over 65." @default.
