- W268429141 abstract "This chapter discusses the effects of some important psychopharmacological agents on the regulation of ACTH secretion. Most drugs that affect emotional behavior and mood produce marked and often persistent effects on the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) as well as alterations in other pituitary functions. Psychopharmacological agents such as reserpine, chlorpromazine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and amphetamine have profound effects on ACTH secretion. Whether current knowledge of the mechanism of action of these drugs permits the interpretation of their neuro-endocrine effects in detail in terms of monoamine changes is doubtful. It is, however, reasonably consistent with observations to propose that, in the rat, psychopharmacological agents may initiate marked and persistent changes in the rate of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) release by acting upon neural mechanisms in the brain that control this process. Those drugs that produce cholinergic effects or block central adrenergic activity increase the rate of CRF secretion. Those drugs that augment adrenergic activity or block central cholinergic processes reduce the rate of CRF secretion. Changes in pituitary and adrenal activity are secondary to these neuro-endocrine control mechanisms." @default.
