- W268483252 abstract "A preliminary quantitative procedure for the prediction of future nitrate levels in important water supply sources in the United Kingdom is outlined. Such a procedure is necessary to provide the information upon which strategic planning decisions may be taken. A systematic approach to the problem together with a review of the availability of data leads to the identification of areas where additional information and research are required. These areas include rates of vertical movement and dispersion of nitrate in soils and unsaturated strata, long and short term temporal variations in the nitrogen content of rainfall, amounts of nitrogen permanently or temporarily immobilized by the unharvested parts of crops, annual losses from the soil by denitrification related to soil and crop type, rates of denitrification in unsaturated and saturated aquifers, and rates of nitrate loss in transit in streams and rivers. Sample calculations are made for a generalized chalk catchment in eastern England based on a series of quantitative assumptions concerning the nitrogen cycle, the catchment hydrology and hydrogeology, and the trends in agricultural practices in such areas. Gradual rises in nitrate levels in the chalk aquifer from about 35 to around 50 mg/1 are estimated for the period 1950 to 1970 and a further eventual rise to about 80 mg/1 is predicted if the assumed agricultural practices were to persist. In rivers draining such areas the nitrate levels are estimated to have risen from about 30 to around 50 mg/1 in the same period but are predicted to show no further rise at a sustained level of agriculture development equivalent to that assumed for 1970. Both the model and the data used for the calculations are open to question but the use of such quantitative methods are justified in terms of the data and research inadequacies they bring to light and the general understanding of the response of the system to which they can ultimately lead." @default.
