• W26895938 abstract "This study explores the taxonomy, host-specificity and geographical distribution of two complexes of faustulid trematodes in chaetodontid fishes of the tropical Indo-West Pacific. In addition, a single new species (Paradiscogaster leichhardti n. sp.) is described from a pomacanthid fish, Chaetodontoplus meredithi Kuiter from the southern Great Barrier Reef. The main study is based on the parasitological examination of 2,872 individuals of 47 chaetodontids species at seven major localities in the tropical Indo-West Pacific: Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia; Palau; Lizard Island, Queensland; Swain Reefs complex, Queensland; Heron Island, Queensland; New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Specimens resembling two existing species, Paradiscogaster flindersi Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1994 and Paradiscogaster glebulae Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1994, were subjected to detailed morphological and molecular analysis to establish their taxonomic status. P. glebulae is shown, especially on the basis of molecular analysis, to comprise a complex of six morphologically similar species in Great Barrier Reef chaetodontids. Four new species (Paradiscogaster vichovae n. sp.; Paradiscogaster armandi n. sp.; Paradiscogaster adrianae n. sp.; Paradiscogaster munozae n. sp.) are described; a fifth distinct taxon is not formally described for want of sufficient morphological material. The six species in the P. glebulae complex show a striking distribution among the 34 species of Chaetodontidae examined on the Great Barrier Reef. Just 11 of the chaetodontid species were ever infected. These were two species of Chaetodon Linnaeus Clade 2, six of Clade 3, a single species (infected only once) from Clade 4, and, of nine species of the Bannerfish clade (Coradion, Chelmon, Forcipiger and Heniochus), just two species of Heniochus Cuvier. Most strikingly, four of the species were found in Chaetodon citrinellus Cuvier and three (all shared with C. citrinellus) were found in Heniochus varius Cuvier. Sharing between C. citrinellus and H. varius was not detected in the detailed analysis of the host-specificity of monorchiid trematodes of Great Barrier Reef chaetodontids. The basis of this unusual pattern of host-specificity requires further exploration. Paradiscogaster flindersi is shown to have a complex host and distributional relationship with a new species, Paradiscogaster oxleyi n. sp. Both species were found in the same fish species (and even the same individuals) at Swain Reefs but had otherwise non-overlapping geographical distributions; P. oxleyi n. sp. was found at Swain Reefs, Lizard Island and Palau whereas P. flindersi was found at Heron Island, Swain Reefs, New Caledonia and Ningaloo Reef. Neither species was found at French Polynesia despite the presence of suitable hosts, consistent with the established pattern of a depauperate trematode fauna there. The host distribution of the species, obligate corallivores, strongly suggests that they have their metacercariae in coral." @default.
