- W269323278 abstract "John Quincy Adams. By Lynn Hunt Parsons. (Madison, Wisconsin: Madison House, 1998) $29.95. After Paul Nagel's disappointing biography of John Quincy Adams, published in 1997, by Alfred Knopf, Lynn Hudson Parsons' shorter, less speculative, more solid, and equally vivid narrative, is most welcome. Unlike Nagel, who is bent on interpreting the strengths of Adams's public career as projections of his unsatisfactory personal relationships and enmities, Parsons presents far more balanced interpretation. The result is an attractive volume that, if issued in paperback, would make wonderful supplement for survey or upper-level college courses, for Parsons relates Adams' fascinating life to the larger historical developments of his era, many of which he had hand in shaping. Adams not only looked like his father, the first President Adams, he thought, worked, and acted much like him. Parsons notes that his highminded parents at least twice expressed the thought that they would prefer not to have son, rather than to have an immoral, profligate (p. 15) one who preferred a life of ease and elegance to reverence for Religion, Morality, and Liberty (p. 12). Adams either thrived on these standards, as did John Quincy and his own son, Charles Francis, or were ruined by them, as did two other sons who turned to dissipation and suffered mental instability. Like the elder Adams, the younger could never be assured he was doing the right thing unless he was in minority, usually of one, espousing singular opinion. From his support of Jefferson's Embargo and the War of 1812 in Federalist New England to his independent, nonpartisan service in Congress for two decades after his presidency during the great age of party formation, Adams gloried in his cantankerousness, much as his father had. He refused, for instance, to become Whig, even though his principles and theirs were identical. The nearly must be used because the exception was that Adams never accepted the usefulness of political parties as means of uniting diverse nation as being more important than their partisanship and corruption. Parsons devotes sufficient attention to all three phases of Adams' life: his successful career as diplomat, culminating in his formulation of Monroe Doctrine the rest of the president's cabinet initially, and characteristically, opposed; his failure as president way ahead of his times, who thought the federal government should support research and economic development; and his spectacular attack on slavery in the House of Representative, which kept him in the public eye as one of the most loved (and hated) men in the nation. …" @default.
