- W269432867 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the vibriophages and vibriocins. On the basis of the lytic patterns, vibriophages can be differentiated into four distinct groups: I, II, III, and IV. The vibriophages possess a polyhedral head and a tail. The first step in the interaction between a vibriophage particle and its host cell is specific adsorption. The bacteriocins, in general, were earlier considered as antibiotics with a narrow bacterial host range and of activity depending on their accessibility to suitable surface receptors on the sensitive bacteria. The conditions for vibriocin production are closely related to those for bacteriophage induction. Vibriocin are proteinaceous in nature and are heat resistant. The reaction of vibriocin with a sensitive cell is expected to be biphasic in nature. The first phase involves the adsorption of the particles to specific receptors at the cell surface (adsorption phase). This is followed by the second phase when pathological changes leading to death of the cell (lethal phase) occurs. At the molecular level, vibriocin inhibits DNA synthesis in sensitive cells and promotes DNA degradation leading to the leakage of nucleotides. The vibriophages and vibriocins find its application in typing of bacteria and several therapeutic and prophylactic uses." @default.
