- W26946952 abstract "158 Objectives Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are solid-state light sensors comprising a large number of single-photon counters based on Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (GM-APDs). SiPMs are compact, exhibit fast and accurate photon counting performance, and are MRI-compatible. Moreover, it has recently been shown that SiPMs enable better timing resolution than photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) when used as photosensors in scintillation detectors for time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET). Recently, a fully digital version of the SiPM, the so-called digital silicon photomultiplier (dSiPM), has been introduced. Each time a dSiPM detects a scintillation pulse, integrated digital logic outputs the total number of scintillation photons counted, as well as an accurate time stamp. Here we present the performance of TOF-PET detectors comprising monolithic scintillators and prototype dSiPM. Methods Prototype dSiPM arrays were provided by Philips Digital Photon Counting (PDPC), having a total sensor area of 32 mm x 32 mm and consisting of 8 x 8 dSiPM pixels at a pitch of 4 mm. Arrays were optically coupled to monolithic LSO:Ce crystals. Using a collimated ( Results With 10 mm thick, Ca-codoped, monolithic LSO:Ce crystals a coincidence resolving time (CRT) for two detectors in coincidence better than 350 ps full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) was obtained, in combination with sub-mm FWHM detector spatial resolution and ~11.5% FWHM energy resolution. Conclusions Although a moderate amount of cooling (to ~0 °C) was required, this rather unique combination of excellent spatial- and timing resolution illustrates the potential of this detector concept as a cost-effective, scalable, MRI-compatible TOF-PET module for clinical PET applications. The prospects for using dSiPMs in high-performance TOF-PET and PET/MRI scanners will be discussed in more detail at the conference.
