- W2695486500 abstract "Carbon is a cheap and abundant, but at the same time irreplaceable material, which due to its versatility and favorable properties has become an integral part of electrochemical energy applications, such as fuel cells and batteries. In these systems, its functions are manifold ranging from active material to conducting additive, such that it conducts electrons, offers high surface area for the reaction or even adds to the electrocatalytic activity. Consequently, this chapter is divided into three parts corresponding to the carbon's three main functions in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) as follows: 1) Carbon as a support material 2) Carbon as a catalytically active component 3) Carbon as structure-forming element in porous fuel cell electrodes. It gives an overview of the recent literature in this thriving field without intending to be an exhaustive chapter and also describes recent contributions of the authors as well as the latest advances in the design of sp2 carbons. Because of their negligible role in fuel cell applications, diamond-like sp3 carbon structures, such as nanodiamonds and boron-doped diamonds, are not the subject of this chapter." @default.
