- W26955510 abstract "This chapter describes that taste and olfaction share certain common features. For example, transduction mechanisms in both these chemical senses involve G-protein-coupled receptors and increases in intracellular cyclic nucleotides. This is the case for sweet and some bitter taste stimuli and all odoriferous stimuli studied till date. Transduction channels and integral membrane receptors are concentrated on the apical tips of both types of chemosensory receptor cells. Sensory transduction in taste and olfaction is similar to that in other modalities, notably photoreception. Photoreceptors, taste receptor cells, and olfactory receptor cells all possess ion channels that are modulated by cyclic nucleotides. The chapter discusses that there are key differences between olfaction and taste. Olfactory receptor cells are optimized to low concentrations of chemical stimuli, whereas taste receptor cells are optimized to higher concentrations. Another difference is that taste cells possess ligand-gated ion channels in addition to ion channels that are either permeated or blocked by certain chemical stimuli." @default.
