Washington, DC: CQ Press, pp. 342. * Houston, Brant and Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (2009). The Investigative Reporter's Handbook: A Guide to Documents, Databases and Techniques. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin's, pp. 554. * Wenger, Debora Halpern and Deborah Potter (2008). Advancing the Story: Broadcast Journalism in a Multimedia World. Washington, DC: CQ Press, pp. 352. Seasoned educators lament the state of affairs in investigative reporting, or rather lack of attention to timehonored traditions of investigation, advanced reporting, or reporting-indepth - the by-product of media mergers, consolidation, and cutbacks. Could there be a better time for texts to address the role of investigative reporting in this era of our development? To that end, three works are available. One is a revision of a proven text, now in a fifth edition, by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE). The other two are new entries by CQ Press. Each was prepared by seasoned journalists, turned educators. William C. Gaines received a Pulitzer Prize for reporting corruption in Chicago politics. He teaches at the University of Illinois. Brant Houston holds the Knight Chair at the same institution and taught previously at the University of Missouri-Columbia's journalism school. Houston also received recognition as an investigative reporter at the Kansas City Star and Hartford Courant. The co-authors of the third text on broadcast journalism, Debora Halpern Wenger and Deborah Potter, are veteran broadcast reporters. Before joining Virginia Commonwealth University, Wenger was an executive producer and news director. Deborah Potter is known for work as CBS correspondent, instructor at Poynter Institute, and American Journalism Review columnist. Gaines' book provides an excellent overview to reporting - real and hypothetical - based on experience conducting major investigations. The writing is conversational, with an eye toward offering a practical outlook at what they might uncover digging deep into a story. This includes background on how many resources are required to take a serious, even-handed look at a complex subject: surveying the details on how to gain access to information including public documents and databases, and how to sell the investigation with a need to win over the necessary institutional support. An early chapter on the use of the Internet, while already somewhat dated, provides a useful overview. As one might expect, a topical outline of who, what, where, when, why, and how the needed-for resources are expended on investigations follows. It includes the usual suspects: public figures, institutions, police and courts, business, consumer fraud, charities and nonprofits, and, of course, health care. Integrated throughout are insights on interviewing, a sampling of documents, and questions that might accompany those. Appendices layout the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and provide background concerning the law that makes financial information of tax-exempt groups public, concluding with a comparison of writing styles across various multi-media platforms. The second book, The Investigative Reporters Handbook, now in a fifth edition, offers a comprehensive overview of areas requiring investigative attention. When a book reaches its fifth edition, one can surmise it is reaching readers and, in this case, performing important service. Careful scrutiny is given to investigating the issues and interests one might expect, but added attention is given to lessglamorous areas related to public performance and tax dollars, including public education. The potential adopter of this text, not familiar with earlier editions, should not be put-off by the title's reference to a handbook. It contains some proven prescriptions for success. The names of prominent investigators, as well as those historically associated with IRE, including prior editors (John Ullmann, Len Bruzzese, Jan Colbert, and Steve Weinberg), crop-up periodically in this updated edition. …" @default.
