- W2705491216 abstract "To activate students’ preconceived notions on a given controversial topic, various approaches have been taken using a ‘STEPWISE’ curricular and pedagogical framework. Such preconceived notions are brought to conscious awareness by engaging students in meaningful dialogue with themselves, with each other and through interactions with media (e.g. news articles, images, videos). Students get to express their views in various forms, such as writing a song, writing a letter to the government, creating an informational pamphlet/poster, participating in a discussion board/forum, or creating a video to target consumers of a given product. Products created by students were assessed on the basis of whether or not relevant stakeholders were discussed, ensuring that different sides of an issue were evaluated and on how well they communicated their points of view. The STSE expectations of the Ontario curriculum lend themselves to addressing issues that are of an economic, social, environmental and even a political nature. Some issues students analyzed included controversies surrounding water pollution and STSE issues related to drinking water, assessing the impact of human intervention on the health of fish, as well as ethical implications of stem cell research. Such issues were explored by having students participate in various ‘expression’ activities that incorporated case-methods and cooperative learning structured activities (e.g. placemat, jigsaw, three-step interview, and value line formation). Through various pedagogical approaches, students expressed their conceptions and positions on issues in order to eventually orient them to the goals of primary research as well as actions for WISE. Students can then prioritize different stakeholders, in terms of relative power by considering the roles of people, business, government, as well as activists." @default.
