- W2707372007 abstract "The influence of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) arcing process for surface modification by varying arcing current and arc travel speed while the voltage was kept constant at 10.5 ± 1.0 V on AISI 4340 steel plate was studied in this work. Primarily parameters were optimized by using single-pass TIG arcing process in reference to attain maximum hardening of the modified surface. Further, the optimized parameters were used in multi-pass arcing to produce a wider area of surface modification with optimum hardening. Microstructures of the fused and heat affected zones and their reheat tempered regions raised by the isotherms and thermal cycles of the subsequent arcing passes were studied under an optical microscope. The hardness was measured at different locations of the multi-pass modified surface of the substrate and its distribution in the matrix. The surface hardness of the substrate was found to be raised from 250 HV ± 10–720 ± 25 HV and 445 ± 25 HV for single and multi-pass, respectively. Flexural yield point and ultimate strength were found to be significantly improved over that of the base metal for the multi-pass." @default.
