- W270922016 abstract "Studying English teachers' classroom practices has generally occurred in two ways. First, information about what takes place in a teacher's class can be obtained by having one or more observers record what goes on. In English, direct observation studies, particularly of in-class writing instruction, have during the past decade provided us with a rich source of information about what happens in selected classes for limited periods of time (Applebee, 1981 ; Florio and Clark, 1982; Graves, 1983; and Pettigrew, Shaw, and Van Nostrand, 1981). The fresh insight into the nature of writing instruction from such studies has been invaluable. Moreover, there is confidence that the information obtained from such observations is accurate and reliable. Unfortunately, obtaining information about classroom instruction through direct observation is not a practical approach for most teachers, for most school districts, or for many researchers and teacher educators concerned with monitoring classroom instruction for a large number of teachers over extended periods of time. Direct observation is expensive in both time and personnel. There are also some uncertainties about the effects of an observer in the classroom. The use of self-report procedures, on the other hand, would seem to be a practical alternative. In self-reporting, the teacher usually completes a survey or inventory about classroom instruction; basic costs are minimal and the procedure is flexible. Because the teacher usually completes the self-report outside of actual class time, there is neither the intrusion of an outsider nor disruption of normal classroom procedures. However, the results from teacher self-reports are generally held to be suspect. As discussed extensively in a review by Hook and Rosenshine (1979), evidence about the accuracy of teachers' self-reports on their teaching practices as determined by either observer-reports or student-reports consistently indicated that teachers were unable to report accurately about what they did in the classroom. Therein lies a dilemma. If teachers are not accurate in the" @default.
