Subsequently, in my Message in the September/October issue, The Sounds of Nursing Leadership, I offered a definition of leadership that I had developed with my colleague, Dr. Joan Shaver: Leadership is the art and science of engaging people in envisioning and enabling the creation of a preferred future. This definition contrasts dramatically with representations of leadership that were patriarchal in terms of both processes and ends. For example, President Truman is reported to have defined leadership as getting people to do what they would not otherwise choose to do and like it. In a more recent representation, in Dr. Maryann Fralic's plenary address at the convention (reproduced in Nursing and Health Care Perspectives, September/October 1999), leadership was contrasted with management. manager was portrayed as the person who planned, organized, and directed the cutting of the path through the woods, whereas the leader was the one who knew to say, Oops, wrong jungle. Although I believe a leader must have vision and some sense of the future and, indeed, should not be wandering in the wrong woods, in my opinion, the leader's vision is not the defining feature of leadership. Rather, the engagement of others in envisioning and creating the future is the hallmark of transformative leadership, and mutuality in relationships is an essential feature. One essential skill in this mutual relationship is the ability to influence others to engage in, and remain engaged in, co-creation. I want to share my thoughts about some symbolic tools that will be important as we work toward this transformation. Co-creating our preferred future requires a multitude of subset skills represented by a wand, a baton, and a gavel -- a Waterford crystal gavel, that is. wooden gavel -- a symbol of power and order -- is no longer relevant or appropriate.
