- W271255285 abstract "A few months ago a representative of a publishing house asked me to give a critical reading to an elementary school language and composition series that was being readied for publication. The series, which covers grades 1 through 8, I found very impressive. It was readable, fresh, and sometimes even imaginative, as well as linguistically sound. I gave it a high rating. One of features I especially liked was breadth of its treatment of language. Long ago, of course, publishers and many teachers came to realize that language is not merely grammar and usage plus some odds and ends of punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. This new series, though, while not neglecting these familiar elements, pays much attention to other areas of language, areas that tend to be ignored in elementary schools. It has material, for instance, on dialects; intriguing bits that will show children that our language has a history and has in past existed in forms considerably different from what we now hear and read; basic instruction in semantics, such as the map is not country; an introduction to sources of place-names and of people's names; and assistance in using dictionary with intelligence, ease, and perhaps even affection. The material on grammar stresses sentence combining, which was recently found praiseworthy in studies analyzed for Research in Teaching English. So I told publisher that I was enthusiastic about new series. I still am, but I have one reservation that publisher can't do much about: This fine material is about ready for children, but are teachers ready for fine material? How many elementary school teachersor high school English teachers, for that matterknow much about excellent research concerning dialects that has been reported in past ten to twenty years? I still sometimes talk with teachers who think that a dialect is something a bit shameful, something that teachers should try to cure students of; some of these teachers believe that a dialect is any type of English that differs from their own. They remind me of Texas woman at time when Lyndon Johnson became President. She expressed her sadness over assassination of John Kennedy, but said that she admired Johnson, too, and opined that it was rather nice to have a President who didn't speak a dialect." @default.
