- W271890066 abstract "The adsorption of cesium and strontium by ferric silicate was investigated using coprecipitation as the method. The ferric silicate was produced by complete precipitation of iron and silica from ferric chloride and sodium silicate solutions in the presence of cesium or strontium chloride. The ratio of (SiO/sub 2/)/(Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/) used was 3. The investigation covered a pH range from 6 to 12 and was adjusted by addition of 2.0N sodium hydroxide. The range of equilibrium solution concentrations for cesium varied from 1 x 10/sup -5/ to 1 x 10/sup -1/ meq/ml. The concentrations were determined using Cs/sup 137/ as a radioactive tracer. The range of equilibrium solution concentrations for strontium varied from 1 x 10/sup -5/ to 1 x 10/sup -1/ meq/ml for pH 6 and 1 x 10/ sup -6/ to 1 x 10/sup -1/ meq/ml for pH 7 to 12. The concentrations were determined using Sr/sup 89/ as a radioactive tracer. Distribution coefficients between the solid and liquid phases were determined from the adsorption data. The coefficients for cesium were found to reach a maximum at pH 9, 10, and 11 and to decrease at pH 12 for each equilibrium solution concentration. The distribution coefficients for cesiummore » varied from a low of 1.3 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at pH 6 and equilibrium solution concentration of 1 x 10/sup -1/ meq/ml to a high of 100 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at pH 9, 10, and 11 equilibrium solution concentration of 1 x 10/sup -5/ meq/ml. Distribution coefficients for strontium were found to reach a maximum at pH 11 and to decrease at pH 12 for each equilibrium solution concentration. The coefficients varied from a low of 9 2 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at pH 6 and equilibrium solution concentration of 1 x 10/sup -7/ meq/ml to a high of 19800 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at pH 11 and equilibrium solution concentration of 1 x 10/ sup -6/ meq/ml. A study of desorption of strontium on ferric hydroxide indicated that the strontium could be desorbed from 99% adsorption to 3% adsorption by changing the pH from 10 to 5. Time studies on the adsorption of strontium by ferric hydroxide and ferric silicate indicated that time of contact had no effect on the adsorption. The solution was in equilibrium after 5 minutes contact which was the minimum time for mixing and sampling. (auth)« less" @default.
