- W2719106251 abstract "According to Ruth O’Callaghan, the contemporary British poetry scene is still predominantly patriarchal and, to a certain extent, the British women poets interviewed here concur with this. At the same time, the strength of this collection is that it is neither limited to British poetry nor is it constrained by narrow definitions of feminism. U. A. Fanthorpe’s response to the question concerning the influence of the feminist movement on her poetry is fairly typical: ‘My writing is more affected by historical events’. All these writers are attuned to the pressures of the historical moment and all speak of the particular political contexts within which they are writing and working. The interviews that explore the cultures and history of Eastern Europe such as Romania, Ukraine, and Russia offer fascinating and sobering insights into the effects of state censorship and suppression. For instance, under the Ceaușescu regime, as Lidia Vianu, poet and academic, suggests ‘Romania was a land of social, verbal, political prisons’. The Ukrainian poet Oksana Zabuzkho talks about being part of the ‘New Wave’ of artists that emerged in the wake of the break-up of the Soviet Union: ‘We entered the literary scene as “children of liberty”, driven, among other things, by a strong postcolonial impulse’. She recalls with enthusiasm the opportunities that opened up to ‘create a free literature for a free nation’. The Russian poet Larissa Miller’s publication history reveals the extent to which the state silenced individual expression. For her first collection, published in 1977, her editor omitted all the poems that included the word ‘God’ as well as those deemed politically subversive. By the early 1990s, after perestroika, she was able to publish freely and her work became widely available." @default.
