- W2724146449 abstract "This paper is a normative discussion about the educational process based on an assessment of the competing metaphors that have been used to describe that process. The assessment carries us toward a search for an alternative to the consumer metaphor. A number of scholars have stressed the significance of metaphors generally. For Aristotle (1984), ordinary words convey only what we know, while metaphors enable us to grasp fresh meanings. Similarly, Ricoeur (1977) sees metaphor as introducing the spark of imagination into our analysis by prod ding us to think beyond where the literal has led us. Suggesting an even greater significance for metaphors, Lakoff and John son (1980) assert that metaphors carry a cognitive content that cannot be captured by paraphrase. Metaphors, by their very nature, appear wearing a disguise (Turbayne 1970). They enable us to catch partisan, necessarily incomplete glimpses of a problem or phenomenon. Their con structive side is the bridge they provide between something we already comprehend and something else that we are desper ately trying to grasp; the effect when metaphor fulfills this role is a richer set of personal inferences (Wheelwright 1967). No metaphor is a perfect key for unlocking insight or instrumental behavior. But the criterion by which they flourish or die in the contest with alternative metaphors for our loyalty is the social consequences of their implications." @default.
