- W2724434946 abstract "Background: Within the hospital field, hospital organizations seek ways to remain fiscally viable and perform well within their markets. Various studies have connected organizational viability and performance to a range of factors, including community responsiveness, managerial approaches, organizational characteristics, and market influences. Objective: Through the use of the institutional theory framework, this study considers the practices hospitals pursue that align with two institutional values, community and corporatization, to understand how these practices interact with other environmental factors to relate to hospital performance measures. Methods: This multilevel study is based on the national U.S. hospital population, studying data collected through the American Hospital Association Annual Survey for the years 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010 and supplemented by demographic, market, and policy information collected from other sources, using both logistic and linear regression methods. Results: Analysis shows that organizational practices and characteristics relate to performance measures. High levels of involvement in community benefit planning practices indicate lower likelihoods of closure, and greater community engagement is related to market share. Resources, location, and organizational identity are all found to relate to viability and performance as well. Conclusions: The relationship of a high level of involvement in these planning practices to lower odds of closure echoes other findings that community engagement and responsiveness relate to better chances of survival and positive long-term performance. Both high community benefit activity orientation and high community benefit planning orientation relate to strong market share performance. This further emphasizes the role community engagement plays in organizational success." @default.
