• W2725509398 abstract "This research mainly aims to explore a strategic direction in response to the nuclear missile advancement of North Korea by evaluating its implications. To this end, the research primarily analyzes the nuclear capability and nuclear strategy of the Kim Jong-un regime and then utilizes such analysis to evaluate the implications of nuclear advancement by categorizing them into four dimensions: 1) international dimension; 2) dimension of inter-Korean relations; 3) dimension of South Korea and North Korea, etc. The main findings of the research are as follows; first, the level of threat posed by the North to the national security has significantly increased compared to the past, due to the advancement of nuclear capability of the Kim Jong-un regime; second, in spite of the North’s growing nuclear capability, its advancement will only have a marginal impact on the U.S. deterrence capability, the U.S. policy toward North Korea, and the non-proliferation treaty of the international community. Moreover, Pyongyang’s advancement of its nuclear program will not shake the balance of military power between the South and the North for the time being. However, the aggressive nuclear strategy and advancement of nuclear capability of the DPRK might violate the strategic interests of regional powers in Northeast Asia, which could escalate the inter-state conflicts. In addition to that, the inter-Korean relations are likely to continue to be marked by tensions on the various levels. The Republic of Korea should proactively seek a practical way to deter the nuclear threat from North Korea, building on the objective strategic evaluation on such a changing security environment. Furthermore, it needs to put in place strong sanctions against Pyongyang to block the advancement of its nuclear capability and induce it to come to a denuclearization dialogue." @default.
