- W2725927211 abstract "We often notice that adolescent sexuality shows, especially in its first stages, an earlier onset and it is also more ephemeral and transitory, based more on acting and experiencing feelings than on building loving relations. In this expression of adolescence today, as well as in others, the recourse to sensations at the expense of relations is prevailing: feeling takes the place of thinking. We can gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of cuts self inflicted by some patients as linked, in the most serious cases, to the feeling of an inconsistent identity or a serious identity conflict, whose unruliness find temporary solace in the “envelope of suffering” it creates. These are clearly extreme measures which however allow through cutting one’s skin to re-establish certain primitive psychological functions, such as the sense of the body’s and of the Ego’s boundaries and the “feeling of being intact and consistent”.The recourse to these symptoms entails the reconstruction of the function of “linking different categories of feelings in a shared sensory space” that the patient did not enjoy due to his/her parental couple’s and family’s default exactly at this level. All the current changes in the family’s shapes attack the sense of identity and encourage the most superficial behavioural changes which can improperly or adhesively support the self and provide an apparent skin." @default.
