- W2726027063 abstract "This chapter opens with a brief overview of the chemistry of the rare earth elements that is relevant to their applications in Lewis acid catalysis. It then describes simple mono-functional Lewis acid catalysis with the main focus on how Ln(OTf)3 (Ln = rare earth element) can be modified with chiral ligands to effect enantioselective catalysis. Rare earth triflates Ln(OTf)3 are the simplest type of rare earth Lewis acid: their reactivity is limited to adduct formation or Lewis acidity. The simplest chiral modification of Ln(OTf)3 is achieved by the addition of a neutral ligand. The chapter also considers bifunctional catalysts, in which both electrophile and nucleophile are activated, and deals with monometallic catalysts, progressing to homobimetallic and heterobimetallic catalysts. The chapter further aims to give the reader an understanding of the important features of each class of catalyst, illustrated with representative examples, rather than to present an exhaustive summary of the extensive literature in the area." @default.
