- W2726584675 abstract "This chapter situates the discussion of intercultural competence in London Chinese complementary schools with British Chinese pupils aged from 13 to18. The specific focus is to examine the use and pupils’ feedbacks of different categories of cultural activities in these schools in the learning of community/heritage language (CHL) and culture. Drawing from accounts of pupils in four Chinese complementary schools, together with the author’s observations from working as a teacher in one such school, this chapter categorises the current use of cultural activities in London Chinese schools. It presents a contrasting picture of pupils’ responses towards various types of cultural activities ranging from excitement and enjoyment to embarrassment and antipathy. These attitudes in turn may enhance or hinder pupils’ motivations of learning CHL. The findings disclose the fact that given the abundant benefits cultural activities can offer, many existing cultural activities used to teach Chinese culture in these schools fail to meet the diverse needs of CHL pupils with multi-faceted cultural identities. This chapter argues that teaching Chinese culture in CHL classrooms is not to ‘maintain’ or promote a fixed cultural memory but to recognize the discursive meanings of interculturality and develop intercultural competence of CHL pupils. This chapter suggests teaching culture by using carefully designed and executed cultural activities that could actively engage pupils to critically question the implicit and explicit cultural assumptions; and encourages pupils to connect aspects of their linguistic and cultural heritage in relation to their lives and identities in Britain." @default.
