- W2727832693 abstract "The Miocene of the northern border of the CarpathiansThe Miocene in Poland js developed in two fades: the southern Miocene is marine, the northern Miocene is of continental, lacustrine origin (lignite formation). The thickness of the marine Miocene is variable, it is the greatest in the marginal group .of the northern Carpathians (100—500 m at Bitkow and Boryslaw) and in their foreland (up to 400 m). The continental Miocene is only several m thick, only in some places attains 120 m (the district of Gdansk), The Miocene of the northern border of the Carpathians was deposited along the southern coast of a sea branch, which penetrated north of the Carpathians, as a branch of the Mediterranean Sea; this branch the writer calls „Parathetys“. The Parathetys Sea occupied an oblong basin. Its southern coast was formed by the border of the Carpathians, the northern coast by slopes of a meta-carpathian anticlinorial zone (plateau of Cracow, the Holy Cross Mountains, Podolian plateau). From this basin the sea encroached twice on the western Carpathians through the valley of the Dunajec in the Tortonian time; these two transgressions penetrated to the Pieniny in the south. East of the San river only the lower transgression encroached on the Flysch folds of the so-called Marginal group." @default.
