- W2727883313 abstract "From inception, the vision of the Image Gently (IG) Alliance (originally called the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging) has been a global one. Its mission is, through advocacy, to improve safe and effective imaging care of children worldwide. Over a decade ago, the steering committee of the campaign committed to a simple message of assurance, of collaboration and learning (with free educational materials to this community), and of openness to all stakeholders who are involved in the imaging care of children [1Goske M.J. Applegate K.E. Bell C. et al.Image Gently: providing practical educational tools and advocacy to accelerate radiation protection for children worldwide.Semin Ultrasound CT MR. 2010; 31: 57-63Crossref PubMed Scopus (33) Google Scholar]. The goal was—and is—to change the way we practice. Before the launch of the first educational module on CT scanning in children in 2008, we began to engage a broad, international audience by inviting and working with many international radiology, medical physics, and radiography organizations to share information. The first organizations outside of North America to join the IG Alliance were the regional pediatric radiology societies [the European Society of Paediatric Radiology, the Asian and Oceanic Society for Pediatric Radiology, and the Latin American Society of Pediatric Radiology (Sociedad Latino Americana de Radiología Pediátrica)], and by serendipity, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, and the national radiology and medical physics organizations of Malaysia. From the start, interest in joining the IG Alliance was strong; the steering committee sent out invitations and received requests to join. We are grateful for the support, growth, and continued bidirectional learning that now comprises over 100 Alliance members. The process for membership in the IG Alliance is straightforward and, most importantly, at no financial cost. IG provides background information about its history, requires a signature of agreement from the president of the organization, encourages the organizational leadership to share information with its membership (and vice versa), and requests that organizations place the IG logo on their website. Of the professional medical and dental societies and regulatory bodies in the Alliance today, over one-third are international. The regulatory bodies that have partnered in policymaking, conferences, and training workshops with IG include the World Health Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Radiation Protection Association, and the International Council on Radiation Protection. Examples of fruitful collaborations are many and include the World Health Organization’s “Communicating Radiation Risks in Paediatric Imaging: Information to Support Healthcare Discussion About Benefit and Risk” [2World Health Organization. Communicating radiation risks in paediatric imaging: information to support healthcare discussions about benefit and risk. 2016. Available at: http://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/pub_meet/radiation-risks-paediatric-imaging/en/. Accessed April 8, 2017.Google Scholar], the IAEA/World Health Organization Bonn Conference Call to Action that resulted in 10 action items to increase awareness of radiation protection of patients [3IAEA. Brochure on Bonn Conference call-for-action. IAEA/WHO Joint Statement, December 2012. Available at: https://rpop.iaea.org/RPOP/RPoP/Content/News/poster-on-bonn-call-for-action.htm. Applegate K. et al.IAEA survey of paediatric computed tomography practice in 40 countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa: procedures and protocols.Eur Radiol. 2013; 23 (Accessed April 8, 2017.): 623-631https://doi.org/10.1007/s00330-012-2639-3Crossref PubMed Scopus (49) Google Scholar], and international harmonization of administration of radiopharmaceutical doses in children [6Lassmann M. Treves S.T. EANM/SNMMI Paediatric Dosage Harmonization Working GroupPaediatric radiopharmaceutical administration: harmonization of the 2007 EANM paediatric dosage card (version 1.5.2008) and the 2010 North American consensus guidelines.Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2014; 41 (Accessed April 8, 2017.): 1036-1041https://doi.org/10.1007/s00259-014-2731-9Crossref PubMed Scopus (94) Google Scholar]. Over the past few months, the IAEA radiation protection of patients in medicine has collaborated with IG in a series of webinars on pediatric imaging optimization [5Vassileva J. Rehani M.M. Applegate K. et al.IAEA survey of paediatric computed tomography practice in 40 countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa: procedures and protocols.Eur Radiol. 2013; 23 (Accessed April 8, 2017.): 623-631https://doi.org/10.1007/s00330-012-2639-3Crossref PubMed Scopus (49) Google Scholar]. All of these efforts have furthered our scientific knowledge, shown us practice gaps, and provided new educational tools worldwide. More recent national and transnational radiation campaigns for informed use of ionizing radiation in medical imaging address both communication needs and educational gaps in the various radiology communities: Image Wisely (for adults, 2010), EuroSafe (2014), AfroSafe (2015), LatinSafe, JapanSafe, Canada Safe Imaging, and most recently ArabSafe (2016). IG has collaborated with each of these campaigns from the beginning and will continue to learn and share new knowledge. In a further effort to move toward an international communication, policy, and collaboration structure, the International Society of Radiology has invited Image Gently to partner with EuroSafe leadership and other radiation protection campaigns in further development of the ISR Quality and Safety Alliance. In conclusion, IG is an international volunteer alliance that has centered its educational and advocacy efforts on radiation protection and the appropriate use of imaging in children. The value of the IG Alliance is apparent in the proliferation of radiation protection campaigns with a shared mission built on the basic principles set forth a decade ago: to promote awareness, education, and advocacy to justify and optimize medical imaging in both children and adults." @default.
