- W2728771019 abstract "BACKGROUND: Population surveys aimed to esti-mate prevalence of smoking are limited in reach -ing those members of the intended sample whorarely are present at home. Surveys of thoseproxy household members who are easier avail-able could overcome this problem. The study aimed to evaluate the possibility to esti-mate population smoking prevalence throughproxy reports with the use of the Global Adult To -bacco Survey (GATS) data collected in Ukraine in2010.METHODS: Within the GATS methodology, data onall the adult household members of a selectedgender was collected first from a household mem -ber present. Second, an individual interview wasconducted with a selected individual. Two approaches were used. First approach com -pared the whole population of all the reportedhousehold members with the population of all indi-vidual respondents. Estimates of prevalence werecompared by age groups and by gender. Second approach compared individual interviewdata with the data about same individuals pro -vided by proxies. RESULTS. Compared by gender groups, estimatesof smoking prevalence based on proxy data arecloser to the rates of current smoking in men anddaily smoking in women. With regard to youngergroups, proxies better relay daily smoking whileoccasional smokers may be not reported; in oldergroups, proxy estimates are higher than individualdata as family members may be unaware of recentquitting. In matched analysis most precise proxy reportswere related to never smokers, experimenters, former smokers, and daily smokers. Discrepancieswere related to occasional smokers, both thosewho never smoked daily and those who reducedsmoking from daily to non-daily. CONCLUSIONS. It is recommended to survey theadult who is ready to answer the questions aboutwhole family. The study sample may be increasedsignificantly at low marginal cost, and proxy sur-vey allows estimating population smoking preva -lence with the use of statistical corrections.
