- W2729679961 abstract "This observational study was an attempt to move beyond social service agency definitions of physical child abuse to discover if parents within a similarly classi fied population could be further divided into subgroups or types based on the behavioral and affective quality of their interactions and disciplinary encounters with their children. The social interactions of 73 physically abusive mothers and 43 matched control mothers and their children were videotaped in a simulated home environment. A coding scheme was developed to record the interactional behavior and affect of each parent-child dyad. Based on the observed parenting styles, three subgroups of physically abusive mothers were identified by cluster analytic techniques: emotionally distant, intrusive, and hostile. Examination of abused children revealed a clear relationship between distinct abusive parenting styles and different behavioral profiles of children: Intrusive mothers had very aggressive and disobedient children; the hostile subgroup fostered children who displayed excessive attention-getting behaviors; and children of emotionally dis tant abusive mothers did not differ from their control counterparts on any be havioral measure. To measure parental perceptions of their children, mothers completed the Becker Child Behavior Rating Scale. Parents in all abusive sub groups perceived their children more negatively than controls, even when their children were behaviorally similar." @default.
