- W2731616555 abstract "Sexual harassment reduces womens ability to develop personal power and potential and when women are shamed and angered by sexual harassment social emotional and sexual development is hampered. The aim of this discourse is to describe the abuse of power in relationships in schools and to summarize legal and philosophical approaches to understanding sexual harassment. Operational definitions the extent of sexual harassment and a review of major aspects of prevention and management programs in schools are reviewed. Individuals become vulnerable in schools through violations in trust and the preeminence of the power hierarchy which is complicated by other harassment on the basis of race ethnicity language group physical or sensory disabilities socioeconomic and job role status size and age. Teasing joking and flirting in a sexual manner are not appropriate in school situations. Homophobic labeling whether it be tomboy or sissy generates a separate culture for females and males. Power culture and communication are interrelated and the arguments of Parenti are presented: power must be viewed as more than interpersonal relations because of the influence of culture. Culturally there is violence against women and prevalent sexual harassment in schools and the workplace which reflect societys preoccupation with sex and sexual domination. Powerlessness is learned by females and minorities as the dominant mode of behavior; choices are frequently the denial of cultural beliefs or conformity to a deviant reality. A victims perception of unwelcome sexual behavior determines the presence of sexual harassment. Prevention programs aim to empower the victim. Legal recourse helps eliminate sexual harassment and reduces institutions liability. The 14th Amendment Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act Stoneking vs. Bradford state criminal and civil statutes provide legal protection. Few report cases of sexual harassment and the reasons are indicated. The Massachusetts Department of Education provides videos and curriculum guides. Recommended strategies are to break the silence and hidden blame that surrounds sexual harassment. People must feel a sense of wrongdoing; then policy and a complaint management system need to be implemented. Every policy must stipulate that sexual harassment is unacceptable will not be tolerated and will lead to disciplinary action in order to change the culture of schools. Genuine trust and mutual respect between men and women is the desired outcome." @default.
