- W2732217709 abstract "Introduction. It is well known that the Total Quality Management (TQM) movement has been present for some decades all over the world. What is not recognized is its influence on some aspects of the private life of workers in the developing countries. In a State government office which had already a TQM system, the periodical certification process took place again. Employees complained informally that it signified extra work in addition to their regular tasks leading to a state of intense tiredness Therefore, a hypothesis emerged as a goal of this research:: TQM means a descent in employees’ quality of life. So, it was decided to compare attitudes of clerks in this office with those of employees in a similar government office in which TQM was not implemented. Method . 100 employees in each of the above mentioned offices answered voluntarily questionnaires including the following variables: burnout, psychosomatic disorders (sleep, pain, gastrointestinal affections, depression, anxiety, and neurosis), In addition an instruments on the eight factors of TQM were included. Since nor employees nor offices were assigned randomly, the model was a natural occurring experiment (Dunnig, 2012). A chi-squared test was conducted on two demographic variables (schooling and sex); p was not significant, pointing to resemblance of participants in both offices. Results. On the variable exhaustion , employees in the TQM condition scored significantly higher that the other group. However, contrary to expectations in all other variables (depersonalization, satisfaction, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal and sleep disturbances, as well as in psychosomatic disorders), employees in the not TQM group showed significant higher marks. The group in the TQM condition also exhibited higher scores on the questionnaire about quality. Discussion . It seems that in spite of temporary fatigue due to the extra effort required by the process of re-certification, TQM includes a permanent spill-over effect, in the sense of attaching quality also to some aspects of the private life of employees. In other words, quality is expanded to some facets of quality of life. There are not only organizational effects but also personal ones. However, more research is needed before generalizing these results." @default.
