- W2732558572 abstract "This paper explores the economics of two applications of realtime digital control to discrete-item materials-handling systems. The two applications are a case-lot dry grocery warehouse involving computer control of part of the process, and intra-plant newspaper-transport systems that employ computer control in parts of the system. The conclusion reached is that it may not always pay to automate highly one part of a multi-stage, discrete-item materials-handling process, while leaving the surrounding parts in their original manual mode. A corollary is that, to ensure cost effectiveness, designs for automatization should take into account external operations that interface with the process being automated. In the analyses, four case-lot dry grocery warehouses with various levels of automatization ranging from negligible automatization to a configuration that includes a real-time computer-controlled order selector were examined. Also analyzed were two newspaper-transport systems that extend from the printing presses to loading dock. Both systems employ computers to control the flow of newspaper bundles, but each uses a different transport system configuration. The paper concludes with guidelines for an orderly procedure for ensuring cost- effective automatization designs." @default.
