- W2734507293 abstract "In the mid-1880s, the Berlin criminal investigation department began to deliver press releases pertaining to ongoing police investigations to the city’s leading local papers. The public was thus invited to cooperate with the authorities, in order to solve criminal cases and apprehend the perpetrators. This article examines the new institutional cooperation that was established between the Prussian police and the increasingly important daily press, and especially the resultant public dynamics. This paper argues that for ordinary people, the crime drama taking place then in Berlin provided new chances to participate in the public debate concerning social issues, especially those involving crime. Yet this new public engagement was not generally welcomed. The analysis of the semi-official causes celebres thus leads to the center of the political crisis of Imperial Germany and its challenges." @default.
