- W2734859195 abstract "Pharmaceutical interest in the hygroscopic properties of pharmaceutical solids arises primarily because water associated with solids can act as either an impurity, capable of having negative effects on the properties of solids, or as a component of a pharmaceutical formulation required for the functionality of certain excipients. The process whereby water vapor interacts with solids at a particular temperature and relative humidity is generally referred to as sorption. Sorption can be further categorized as either adsorption or absorption. The equilibrium relationship between water vapor sorption and relative humidity at constant temperature is generally determined by establishing a water vapor sorption isotherm, where somemeasure of the amount of water vapor associated with the solid is plotted against the relative humidity. This chapter explores the meaning of relative humidity in thermodynamic terms, its relevance to hygroscopicity, and how it is generally measured." @default.
