- W2734944304 abstract "This dissertation explores comparisons ofItaly and Latin America in the post-unification emigrationliterature of Italy’s best-selling author and most-read travelwriter, Edmondo De Amicis. Composed during the decade following his1884 transatlantic journey to visit Italian emigration settlementsin Latin America, De Amicis’ Italian-Latin American emigrationnarratives highlight the hardships faced by the author’s emigrantcompatriots. Largely ignored by the academic establishment, thesepopularly successful writings are remarkable for their assimilationof Latin America to geopolitical Italy. Although much Italian emigration following theRisorgimento, for instance by chain and seasonal migrants, wasexperienced harmoniously with life in the Italian homeland, latenineteenth and early-twentieth century Italian nationalist writersand political ideologues portrayed emigration as a transnationalphenomenon incompatible with national Italian identity. Concernedthat mass emigration threatened efforts to project a geographicallycohesive Italian nation that would attest to Italian political andeconomic parity with leading European powers, they supportedimperialist plans to redirect Italian emigrants to state-sponsoredcolonial settlements and accommodate all Italian citizens on whathad traditionally been Italian soil. Consonant with the aims ofItaly’s colonial empire, correlations of Italy and Latin America inwritings by De Amicis naturalize Italian-Latin American emigrantsas residents of the Italian homeland and establish an expansiveterritorial as well as cultural basis for Italian national unity. Contributing to existing scholarship on Italianmigration and national identity formation, my study demonstratesthat the post-unification Italian-Latin American emigrationliterature of De Amicis is a key locus for understandingpost-unification geographical constructions of national Italianculture. Read in their post-Risorgimento context, I explore thehistorical conditions and rhetorical moves by which the textsminimize Latin American alterity and reinscribe Italian-LatinAmerican emigrants within the historical bounds of Italy. Tracingthe evolution of the author’s characterizations of Latin America aswell as its native and immigrant peoples in terms of geopoliticalItaly and domestic Italian society, my work illustrates the specialsignificance of De Amicis’ writing on Italian-Latin Americanemigration for defining and critiquing unified Italian culture." @default.
