- W2736367449 abstract "In this project, I examine how threeProtestant Christian non-governmental organizations in South Africathat were involved in the struggle against apartheid haverecognized gendered inequality and violence. While they shareimportant similarities, the organizations vary in how they perceivegender-based violence (GBV) to pertain to broader questions ofjustice. The differences in their approaches to GBV are partly dueto structural influences, both internal and external, that havegoverned the organizations’ actions over time. Their responses arecontingent upon their constituencies (including particulardenominational connections), relation to the political sphere, internal organizational structure, and dependence upon particularresources. Yet, while these factors are important, they do notfully explain the variation in the organizations’ responses toGBV. I contend that the organizations’theological cultures play a central role in the constitution oftheir responses to GBV. That is, we cannot understand theorganizations’ approaches to GBV without taking into account howthe content of the cultural schemas that they have developed overtime is transposed to GBV. Their theological cultures stem fromdiffering interpretations of the Christian message, and are rootedin the organizations’ constituencies but are also semi-autonomousfrom them. These theological cultures establish routinized patternsof discourse, creating a path dependency for their responses toGBV. My argument about the centrality ofcultural schemas acknowledges the influence of structural factorsand incorporates cultural forces in a multi-causal explanation ofsocial life (Weber 1905 [2010]; 1994). It sees culture asirreducible to underlying structural forces, and perceives itscausal power. I argue that the cultural schemas that are developedin the organizations shape how the problem of GBV is definedinstitutionally (see Polletta 2008:84-86). They each recognize GBVas a social problem, but they differ in their perceptions of whatexactly it is a problem about. This has practical consequences forwhether and how they address it, net of structural conditions. Ishow here that the organizations’ responses to GBV, an issue thatemerged in broad public awareness in the context of the transitionto democracy in South Africa, are rooted in their historicalpatterns of discourse. Thus I also build an “endogenous”explanation of culture’s social power: the organizations’ culturalpatterns established in apartheid explain their cultural patternsof discourse concerning GBV (Kaufman 2004). I demonstrate that thecontent of the cultural schemas developed by the organizations iscontingent and fragile, but also remarkably consistent over time,in ways that directly impact their discourse and actions aroundGBV." @default.
