- W2736691507 abstract "Abstract At the turn of the 19th century, as a result of very deep theorical as well as practical disruptions, man and his diseases, either organic, nervous or mental, are analyzed from a new point of view. At a time when a clinical revolution happens and a new conception of insane persons appears, Franz Anton Mesmer invents the « animal magnetism » that he practises in Austria and then in France. In 1784, during a magnetization and maybe because of it, Armand Marc Jacques de Chastenet, marquess of Puysegur, discloses unexpectedly the « magnetic somnambulism » Dr Braid will name « hypnosis ». In this altered state of consciousness, diseases are cured and very important physicians are interested to this kind of cure. However, in 1837, the magnetic somnambulism is sentenced by academic medecine after the animal magnetism had been condemned itself in 1784. About the case of Estelle, an eleven young girl, who is cured by Dr Antoine Despine, in the water-cure establishment of Aix-les-Bains he rules, I’ll wander if the magnetic somnambulism has been kept out of things for the reason of its inefficiency or for others reasons. I will try to understand how the magnetic somnambulism has been conceived in the course of this first decades of the 19th century." @default.
